Kevens Landscape provides landscape design in Troon, Scottsdale, AZ for homeowners in both Troon Village and Troon North. We design and build desert landscapes, pools and outdoor living spaces that pass architectural review and look like they have always been part of the hillside.
People say Troon as if it were one neighborhood, but it is two master-planned communities. Troon Village wraps around Troon Mountain and the private Troon Country Club. Troon North sits just above it in the Pinnacle Peak foothills, around the Troon North Golf Club. Each has its own master association, and each is divided into smaller sub-associations with their own guidelines.
That matters for your project. The first thing we do is confirm which associations govern your lot and read their current standards. Where a master association and a sub-association disagree, the stricter rule usually applies.
Expect your plans to be looked at more than once. A sub-association may want to see them before the master association's committee checks them against the community-wide standards. We ask each one for its current submittal checklist at the start, so a single set of drawings answers both.
Designing With the Desert, Not Over It
Troon lots sit among granite boulders, washes and mature saguaros, and both the HOAs and the City of Scottsdale protect that setting. Scottsdale's Environmentally Sensitive Lands rules require part of most lots here to stay as Natural Area Open Space, and protected native plants cannot be removed or moved without a city permit.
Troon Village's standards are a good example of how this shapes a design. Custom lots are treated as three zones:
Natural area: left undisturbed, with no permanent irrigation
Transitional area: replanted to match the surrounding desert if it is disturbed
Contained area: inside your patio and courtyard walls, where you have the most freedom
Plants come from an approved list. Turf, live or synthetic, belongs in contained areas only. Visible decomposed granite has to match the native desert color, and path lights are kept low and warm to protect the night sky. We design to those limits from the start instead of redrawing after a rejection.
How the Three Zones Decide Where Features Go
On a custom lot in Troon Village, the zone lines are the first thing we draw. The contained area carries the heavy use. It is where pools, spas, outdoor kitchens, fire features and turf belong. The transitional area is where the built yard fades back into desert. Disturbed ground there is shaped to a natural contour, dressed in granite that matches the native color and replanted from the approved list. The natural area is left alone, which also means crews, material piles and trenches stay out of it.
Boulders and saguaros set the rest of the layout. A granite outcrop can back a seat wall or frame a spa instead of being hauled away, and a mature saguaro gives a patio its focal point. We locate protected plants before design, route trenches and machine paths clear of their roots, and fence them off during construction.
Renovating an Established Troon Landscape
Many Troon homes were built in the 1980s and 1990s, and their yards show it: failing drip lines, overgrown or dying plants, dated flagstone, and pools that need more than new tile. A renovation here is often a careful edit. We keep the boulders and specimen cacti that give the lot its character, rebuild the irrigation, replace tired planting with approved species, and rework patios so the view is the focus.
Patios are where older Troon homes gain the most. Turning the main seating area toward the best view your lot has, trading dark, heat-holding surfaces for lighter stone, and adding shade on the west side can change how often you use the yard. Pools from that era can often be kept. We resurface the interior, replace tile and coping, update the equipment and rebuild the deck around it.
What a Troon Renovation Involves, Step by Step
Most renovations here follow the same order, with the approval step in the middle.
Site audit. We walk the property with you and sort what is there into keep, repair and replace: trees and cacti, boulders, walls, paving and the pool.
Irrigation test. Old drip systems are run zone by zone. Brittle tubing and buried leaks often make more sense to replace than to patch, and a new system can water established desert plants and new ones on separate schedules, as our water-saving irrigation tips explain.
3D design. We model the yard with the existing boulders and grades in place, so you can see how a reworked patio or pool sits against the view.
Association review. We prepare the submittal for your sub-association and master association. Construction waits for written approval.
Construction. Our crews handle demolition, hardscape, pool work, irrigation, planting and lighting, with a superintendent running the job.
Walkthrough. We go over the irrigation controller, lighting settings and plant care with you.
Low, Warm Lighting for a Dark Hillside
One bright fixture on a hillside can be seen from a long way off, so lighting gets close attention in design review. We keep path lights short and warm in color, hide the source of each lamp, and aim light down onto steps, grade changes and a few chosen boulders or cacti. Uplighting is used sparingly and checked against your association's standards first.

Troon Landscaping FAQs
Do I need approval to renovate my landscape in Troon?
In almost every case, yes. Troon Village requires approval for new and renovated landscapes, and Troon North has its own review process. Replacing a dead plant with the same approved variety is typically exempt.
Can I add artificial turf?
Usually only inside enclosed areas such as a walled backyard or courtyard. We confirm what your association allows before we draw it.
Can you work around my saguaros and boulders?
Yes. Protected plants stay in place wherever possible, and any that must move are relocated under a city permit by a salvage specialist. Boulders are usually treated as part of the design, not as an obstacle.
Can you remodel my existing pool instead of building a new one?
Often, yes. If the shell is sound, a remodel is usually the simpler route. If the pool is in the wrong place for the view or for the way you live, we will show you a new layout in 3D so you can compare the two.
Can I renovate in phases?
Yes. You can have the whole yard designed as one plan, then build it in stages. Ask your association how long an approval stays valid before you schedule later phases. Financing is also available for qualified homeowners.
Talk With a Designer
A Troon yard is shaped by things most neighborhoods do not have: two layers of association review, city-protected desert, granite boulders and saguaros older than the house. Good landscape design in Troon, Scottsdale, AZ works with all of that, keeps what is already worth keeping and puts new work where the standards allow it.
The consultation is free and happens at your home. A designer walks the lot with you, looks at the irrigation, paving, pool and planting you have now, asks how you want to use the space, and notes which associations will review the plans. From there we prepare a 3D design for you to react to. Call (623) 535-7654 or request a landscape design estimate to schedule a visit to your Troon home.
