Kevens Landscape provides landscape design in Verdin, the Taylor Morrison master-planned community in north Phoenix, AZ. We design and build backyards for new Verdin homes, from compact interior lots to wide homesites along the preserve.
Verdin opened in early 2026 off Sonoran Desert Drive, and its location is the whole point. The Phoenix Sonoran Preserve borders the community on three sides. Mesquite Wash runs through the middle as a natural corridor with a public trail, and landscaped paseos link the neighborhoods. Few new communities inside Phoenix city limits sit this close to protected desert.
A Verdin backyard should feel like part of that setting. We use desert trees, grasses and flowering shrubs that attract birds and pollinators, and we keep hardscape colors in the tan and rust range of the hills around you.
Preserve-Edge and Wash Lots
Homesites along the preserve boundary are held to particular standards in the community's zoning. Solid block walls are not used on the preserve side. Those lots have view fencing so wildlife can move and the desert stays visible. Homes on the edge rows are also single story.
That changes how you design the yard:
The rear of the lot is the view, so seating, fire and water face outward
Privacy comes from layered planting and low seat walls, not a taller wall
Pool equipment, storage and play structures go to the sides, out of the sightline
Lighting stays low and shielded so the desert stays dark at night
View fencing works both ways: you can see out, and people on the trail can see in. We handle that with placement first. The main seating area and spa go where the house, a ramada or a side wall already gives cover, and open lawn or desert garden takes the exposed middle of the yard. Planting then goes in layers, with a desert tree set to block one specific sightline and low grasses nearest the fence so the long view stays open.
Beside open desert, rabbits and javelina eat tender plants, so we keep those away from the fence line or protect them while they establish. If you want mesh along the bottom of the fence to keep a small dog in, ask the HOA what is allowed before adding it.
For light, we use path and step fixtures and shielded downlights under ramada beams, with nothing aimed at the fence or up into the sky. On lots along Mesquite Wash, we also set grades so the yard drains during monsoon storms, as our yard drainage solutions article explains.
Interior Lots From 45 to 90 Feet Wide
Verdin's lots range from about 45 feet wide to about 90. On a 45- or 55-foot lot, the art is fitting a covered patio, a small pool or spa and a patch of artificial turf without the yard feeling crowded. On the widest lots there is room for a full pool, an outdoor kitchen, a detached ramada and RV access. Either way we begin with a 3D model through our landscape design and build process, so you know what fits before construction.
On the narrower lots, every foot does two jobs. A spa or plunge-size pool sits along the back wall with a raised edge that doubles as seating. Turf is one simple rectangle, and trees go in the corners where they shade the patio without taking floor area. We measure the side gate early because it limits what machinery can reach the back.
As lots widen, the yard gains a second destination, such as a fire pit away from the house, with a path between the two. Toward 90 feet, the risk shifts from crowding to sprawl. We use low walls, grade changes and planting to give the pool deck, dining area and lawn their own edges.
Desert Planting That Belongs Here
The plant palette that suits Verdin is the one already growing past the fence, and we check every choice against the community's standards before it is final.
Trees: palo verde, mesquite, ironwood and desert willow for filtered shade
Shrubs: brittlebush, chuparosa, fairy duster and Texas sage for color and hummingbirds
Accents: agave, ocotillo and golden barrel cactus, set back from paths
Grasses and groundcover: deer grass, pink muhly and desert marigold
Trees and shrubs run on separate drip valves, because a palo verde and a bed of perennials need different schedules. Desert trees are watered deeply and less often so they root well and stand up to monsoon wind. Our water-saving irrigation tips show how watering changes through the year.

After Closing: Steps for a New Verdin Yard
Gather your documents: the plot plan, the HOA's design requirements and your purchase paperwork.
Meet on site. We measure the yard and note slope, drainage, utility boxes and view lines. There is no charge for this visit.
Review the 3D design from the patio, the kitchen window and the fence line, and adjust it until layout and budget fit.
Submit for approval. We prepare drawings for HOA review and for any City of Phoenix permit a pool or structure requires.
Build. Our own crews handle excavation, utilities, hardscape, planting and lighting under one superintendent.
We can phase a larger plan, and financing is available for qualified homeowners.
Approvals and Community Standards
Verdin has a homeowners association, and backyard improvements should be submitted for review before work begins. The community's zoning also sets standards for walls, retaining heights and how slopes are shaped. We read the requirements for your specific lot, prepare the submittal drawings and build to what is approved.
Because requirements differ by lot type, we confirm early whether your homesite is treated as a preserve-edge, wash or interior lot.

Verdin Landscaping FAQs
Can I replace my view fence with a block wall for privacy?
On preserve-edge lots, no. We create privacy with planting, grade and the placement of structures. A ramada, a seat wall or a group of desert trees in the right spot can screen a patio and keep the view.
Does the builder landscape the backyard?
Builders typically finish the front yard and leave the back for the owner. Check your purchase documents, then call us for the rest.
Will a pool fit on a 45-foot lot?
A compact pool or spa often does. We verify setbacks and easements during design. The 3D model shows how much patio and turf remain once the pool is in, which usually decides its size.
Can I light a yard that backs to the preserve?
Yes, with warm, shielded fixtures aimed down and away from the desert. We check the community standards for lighting before the plan is final.
Which plants hold up next to open desert?
Desert natives and desert-adapted plants on drip irrigation. They handle the heat, wind and reflected sun.
Start Your Verdin Backyard
What sets a Verdin yard apart is what lies past the fence. With the Sonoran Preserve on three sides and Mesquite Wash through the middle, the best plans borrow the desert view, keep planting and lighting in step with it, and suit the lot, whether it is 45 feet wide or 90. That is how we approach landscape design in Verdin, North Phoenix, AZ.
At the free consultation we walk your lot, look at views, sun, slope and fencing, go over the requirements for your homesite, and talk about how you want to use the yard and what you want to spend. Call (623) 535-7654 or request a landscape design estimate to schedule a consultation.
